Tewell's First House

OK, I know it’s not the best picture.  I could have worked on the posing more and the flash didn’t fire to light up the house and I was too tired to notice until today when I reviewed the pic on a full size monitor.  But we had just emptied their apartment and dove the Uhaul down to the new house and we all wanted to go get some late dinner.  No time for reshoots and close inspections when we’re all tired and hungry.  I know this one could have been better, but for me – for this picture – it was about the accomplishment and the celebration.  Not photographic perfection.  Congrats Jen and Drew.  I hope you love the new place.

July 1st - Mucho Macha

So here’s my first photo of the 31.  Last Saturday I went to a Macha (sp?) tea ceremony with my sister-in-law and she has been very much into the tea since.  And as I am a fan of most all things asian, I thought I would shoot her bowl, wisk, and spoon for her tea.

There are three flashes used with one reflector and a gobo.  The blue light from behind the bowl is from a Canon 550ex flash on a stand with a shoot through umbrella and a full CTB gel.  I wish that the gell had colored the light from the flash more evenly, but it seems to have worked fairly well.

The main light is from camera right.  Another 550ex, this time on a Justin Clamp affixed to the table with a Honl 8″ snoot used as a reflector.  But with the back light gelled and the main light at about 90 degrees from the camera, the frame was a bit dark on the left side.

So I took my Honl 5″ snoot and used it as a reflector on the left to fill in the shadows on the left of the bowl a bit.  But this was still allowing the smaller red bowl to bleed into the table because they are so close in color.

To fix this next problem, I put my 580exII on a TTL cable with a bounce card and lowered it down and to camera left, realized that there was now too much light wth the extra flash and the reflector, so I put a gobo between the 580 and the blue bowl.  Finally, picure done.

I guess product photography is like that.  A lot of work for what seems like not a lot of photo.  I wish my end result had been more… more… more something.  Maybe I needed a better idea to begin with.  But it works for now.
